Philadelphia, PA – Two children have recently lost limbs due to train accidents in Philadelphia.
According to recent reports from Fox 29, Sienna Ward, 11 years old, had been training to be dancer her whole life. However, those dreams were crushed when at the end of June she was the victim of a horrible train accident in Philadelphia.
Her mother, Natasha Ward, was stunned when police called her to inform her that her daughter had been run over by a fright train on the 5700 block of Grays Avenue in Philadelphia. Apparently, her daughter and her friends were attempting to touch the train as it rode on by. Unfortunately, Sienna slipped and lost her right leg as a result.
As of last week, the doctors were forced to amputate Sienna’s right leg because of an infection that was threatening to claim her the rest of her life. After several surgeries, she is currently in the ICU.
Merely weeks after Sienna’s unfortunate accident, Philly.com reported that 14-year-old Mustafa Elmitwalli fell into the same tracks. Immediately before the train crash, Mustafa had been speaking with his mother on the phone about going to the movies. However, only minutes later she received word that he had been involved in a train accident and was in critical condition as a result.
Philly.com shares that Mustafa made it to safety by hopping on one leg out of harm’s way, where a bystander tied a tourniquet around him which helped stop some of the bleeding. Unfortunately, the doctors at the children’s hospital in Philadelphia were not able to reattach his leg.
Reports share that Mustafa will need another surgery following his train accident in order to help seal the wound. Following that, he will have to participate in rehab therapy in Philadelphia, which will most likely take a couple of months.
Operation Lifesaver, a rail safety education site, shares that in 2015 there were 2,075 total train accidents, with 233 ending in a fatality, and 1,032 resulting injury; in 2016, there were about 2,025 train accidents with even more fatalities coming in at about 265 total, and about 798 injuries.
